About the Author

Kenneth Case, M.D.

From Battlefield to Healing Hands

Dr. Kenneth Case served in the Army as a Chief Health Officer (CHO) for the 29th Civil Affairs Company during the Vietnam War, caring for civilians caught in the conflict. In this position, he and his medics planned clinics, “MEDCAPS”, and immunization programs, worked in refugee camps, developed sanitation projects, and served as the only physicians in the pediatric ward of the Da Nang civilian hospital. It was here that he felt a strong sense of God’s guidance, and it was here that the experience forever shaped his views on faith, service, and humanity.

“My story is one of an attempt, through miraculous placement in a primitive, poverty-stricken, conflict-riddled country, to improve, in some small way, the lives of its people.”

After returning home, Dr. Case devoted more than fifty years to family medicine, becoming a trusted physician and mentor within his community. Known as the “country doctor” for his calm spirit and deep compassion, he practiced medicine as both a science and a calling.

Now retired, Dr. Case reflects on the experiences that defined him, not through the lens of war’s destruction, but through the moments of mercy and courage that emerged in its midst.

A Duty to Serve

In this moving memoir, Dr. Kenneth Case invites readers into his journey, from small-town beginnings to the heart of the Vietnam War, where a young doctor faced unimaginable trials and profound moments of grace.

Through vivid recollections, letters home, and recordings made in the field, A Matter of Faith tells a story of duty, healing, and belief in a higher purpose when the world seemed to be unraveling.

This is not a tale of combat, but of conscience — of a man striving to serve others and hold fast to his faith amid the chaos of war.

A Promise of Remembrance

A Matter of Faith is written to honor those who served, those who suffered, and those who believed in something greater than themselves. It is a testament to how faith can steady a trembling hand and heal wounds both seen and unseen.

“For many years,” Dr. Case writes, “I planned to finish my book about Vietnam, but life’s blessings, family, patients, and purpose filled the time. Now, in retirement, I feel called to complete the story that began more than fifty years ago.”

Through his words, Dr. Case reminds us that even in war, goodness endures, and faith remains the surest path toward peace

"For years after the war, I practiced medicine and raised a family. But the memories of those I served with, soldiers and civilians alike, never left me. I wrote A Matter of Faith to honor their courage and to share how faith sustained us through every hardship."
